Yup, you guessed it; these guys make "experimental" music.

El Ten Eleven is an LA-based instrumental duo that I was exposed to through watching the surprisingly interesting documentary, Helvetica.

It would be too easy to just compare them to other instrumental acts like The Mercury Program. They remind me more of Pinback, Bloc Party and the Jazz June (all bands with a strong vocal presence). It's as if there is a singer but the microphone isn't turned on.

Anyhoo, this track comes with my highest recommendation:

After a couple of interesting compositions for I'm Not There, ex-Pavement frontman and indie rock courtier Stephen Malkmus has finished his fourth solo release. While upon first listen, it's not loaded with the instant-replay pop gems that have charged off his last three albums like lemmings over a ledge, the depth of the songwriting and guitar composition are as remarkable as ever. It's tough to think of any other songwriters who have released 9 consecutive albums that qualify as phenomenal.

I saw Control over the weekend. It's unquestionably rad. Samantha Morton and Sam Riley will deservedly garner rave reviews for their performances, but the standout for me was newcomer Toby Kebbell as the band's manager Rob Gretton. Whether or not you like Joy Division, it's worth checking out for the cinematography and soundtrack alone. It made me immediately go out and get my hands on the parts of the band's discography that I was missing.

It's no secret that most of us here at Love Controls are not big Kanye West fans (with the exception of Horror Section, who wants to have his manbabies). I'm not the biggest hater on the team (that honor belongs to Noah), as I do think the man is an incredibly talented producer, but I still cannot stand the sound of his voice, whether on a song or in an interview. If I am ever tortured, I think I'd fair ok with the waterboarding, but god forbid I be tied up and forced to watch the full episode of MTV Driven - Kanye West.

After the release of a promising mixtape and the song "Can't Tell Me Nothing" (which I listened to on repeat for a full day), I had almost forgotten his general foolishness and given him another chance. Graduation, Kanye's latest album, has done little to change my mind about the man though. The production is amazing and, to his credit, the raps are slightly less aggravating than his previous work. Some songs, notably the ones with featured guests, even succeed despite K-dub's whine-laden bravado. Others, however, fail miserably. Below are two examples of the latter - by far the two worst songs on this or any other hip hop album to come out so far this year. Enjoy (Sadly, I'm sure some of you out there will).

M.I.A.'s new album Kala is out and it has been getting a lot of attention. Having started off as a fan of hers after hearing Piracy Funds Terrorism, Vol. 1, I was put off by all the hype and recycled articles in the press in the wake of the release of Arular. How many times do I need to be reminded that her father is somehow involved with the Tamil Tigers and since when is that a cool thing? Having put my issues with M.I.A.'s politics and media machine minstrelsy behind me, I was ready to give Kala a fresh and unbiased listen. If you liked her last album you will like this one better. If you didn't, this one may still win you over. It's a solid album, incredibly eclectic yet strangely cohesive. A handful of tracks are below. Disfruten. Compren.

Bands To Look Out For In The Future

Radio 4 might be one of those bands that will be compared to the new crop of bands in the summer of 2019. Kind of like when the Strokes started making records and one writer referenced the decades-irrelevant band, Television (really?), thus influencing the legions of hack music writers to regurgitate the reference over and over again as if it were a common observation.

I wasn't buying into it. I tried listening to the "seminal" Marquee Moon and didn't hear anything that sounded like Is This It?

So, the point I'm trying to make is that in 2019, some band is going to be compared to Radio 4 which would have probably fallen of the radar...20 years earlier.

Times are tough for Lil' Wayne. After his album The Carter 3 leaked, he had to release it as a bootleg mixtape, and re-record the whole thing. As if that wasn't enough, Weezee was arrested on gun possession charges last night. Worst of all, Jah Rule was arrested in a separate incident the same night. The Rule association is enough to wipe out any potential street cred from the gun charge. At least the dude is still the best rapper alive since the best rapper retired, right? Right?

Not so certain actually. The guy on the other side of that debate is making a serious push for the crown. T.I.'s new album was just released and it's hot. As good as the Carter 3 bootleg mixtape is, Weezee should be glad he got a second chance at recording the real deal. It's going to take a little more from him to top T.I. v. T.I.P. Hell, don't listen to me...make up your own minds.

It's been 7 years since the last Pharoahe Monch album and about that long since my last blog post. I have legitimate excuses for my lack of productivity - I moved to a new city, started a new job, the "p", "v" and "j" keys on my computer don't work (that sentence alone took me 15 minutes to type out), and, most importantly, my ghostwriter quit (something about no longer wanting to 'live the lie'). What's Pharoahe's excuse? He is a prolific ghostwriter (ask Diddy), so he can't use that last one. I doubt he types out his rhymes, so I don't think he has suffered from any of my crippling tech issues. Sure, he was caught in some label drama, but who hasn't these days? In my opinion, it's taken this long because the man is a perfectionist. After listening to his new album, Desire, I'm convinced there is no other explanation.

Pharoahe has been one of my favorite rappers since his days with Organized Konfusion, so I have been impatiently waiting for this album to drop. Desire is well worth the wait. If you like masterful wordplay delivered in a silky smooth flow and gripping voice over soulful beats, I highly encourage you all to go out and buy this one. You will not be disappointed. It's hard to imagine many other rap albums this year being as good as this, unless the "Carter 3" is as good as Lil' Wayne says it will be or "T.I. v.
